Funding, grants and the research enterprise
CIHR has posted an upcoming funding notice for a Pan-Canadian 2S/LGBTQI+ Knowledge-to-Action Hub with an anticipated $1.69 million envelope and estimated milestones from January 2027 to October 2028. That gives institutions a basis for conditional planning, not a launched competition or confirmed award.
NSF’s October 27, 2026 Dear Colleague Letter gives certain current awardees until November 10, 2026 to seek capped supplements for the 2027 Presidential SI Challenge. For research offices, the immediate task is to screen active awards, test scope fit and build supplement budgets under existing NSF rules.
NSF’s new EFRI Wave-Based Computing solicitation requires a concept outline by email on November 19, 2026 for the FY 2027 cycle, well before any full proposal is due. For research offices, the immediate work is verifying track choice, PI eligibility, budget terms and policy requirements that could become award conditions later.
CIHR’s Nursing in Indigenous Research in Action Chairs notice provides concrete funding, eligibility and timeline details, including a 13 October 2026 webinar. But the same page both says the opportunity is available on ResearchNet and says the official posting will appear there in coming months, leaving research offices with a planning record but not a directly verified portal status.
The European Commission has put €65 million for GENCODE, UniProt, Europe PMC and an open call into Horizon Europe planning. As of 9 October 2026, the public record shows programming and intent, not signed grant agreements, payment schedules or money disbursed.
A September 28 NIH notice says the agency must stay at FY2026 funding levels through December 11, 2026 and cannot implement revised Uniform Guidance in that period. For research offices, the immediate task is to separate temporary federal constraints from award-specific decisions that still depend on each Notice of Award.
An in-scope book can meet an access deadline through a route that is not eligible for the dedicated publication fund. Institutions need to check both questions before promising payment.
Lower registration charges are scheduled for January 2027. Institutions still need to separate registration, membership and the continuing work of correcting metadata.
